Linux is great on supercomputers. It is common among servers. It dominates on mobile devices like phones and tablets with the Android. But on the desktop, so has the use of Linux has remained steady at just over one per cent in the United States, although some other countries have a higher proportion of Linux. But this may now be about to change. An analyst named Chitika Insights has analyzed the traffic of a sister company, Chitika sea container homes Ad Network, over five months. The period is from 1 September 2013 to 31 January 2014 and the area analyzed is the United States and Canada. It has analyzed the web clients that connects to the Chitika ad networks customers and looked at which browsers and which platforms are running on the clients. A total of traffic from over 100,000 website owners with a total of over 300,000 web sites that form the basis for the results. The sites cover a wide range of industries - including automotive, job sites, news and tips - so the results should be representative of the general population uses the operating system and webbbrowsers. Chitikas report focuses sea container homes heavily on Google's Chrome OS and Chromebooks because it was thought that Chrome OS could start pushing sea container homes the use of Linux on the desktop. But it turns out that the share of Chrome OS including Linux has been steady at about 10 percent. Chrome OS grew by 0.13 percentage points from 0.1 percent to just over 0.2. Linux totally grew during the same period from 1.1 percent to 1.9 percent, that is, an overall growth of over 70 percent. A growth of 0.8 percentage points may appear to be little, but given that growth occurred during just five months after having been stable for 10 years, it's quite remarkable. Could be many reasons question then is what has driven this growth. Many comments on various forums have speculated that Valve's strong support for gaming on Linux and their Steam OS will have part in the upturn. Another speculation is that many who have had to abandon Windows XP after it has reached the end of installing Linux on their old machines. None of this is impossible, but Chitika has not released any details about how the 1.9 percent sea container homes Linux is distributed on different Linux distributions. It is clear in any case that Google continues to promote Chromebooks, Chrome OS and its services, and that Valve continues to release games for Linux - most recently Portal 2 released yesterday. It will be very interesting to see the continuation sea container homes of this trend. Perhaps Valve's involvement have been the cork from the bottle after most Linux enthusiasts had almost given up the idea of a breakthrough for the Linux desktop.
