I'm not a lover of sweets with fruit (or is no Miss No?), But I do not know why, when I saw this cake I fell in love. It 'made with whole orange, joining also the peel. Eliminates butter (applause) and flour there is no news. In its place came the ground almonds. the container Result: a soft cake for winter the container with a grainy texture and a slightly bitter flavor the container like candied orange peels.
While you can use to decorate with an orange peel firmer, for the dough I would highly recommend the juicy oranges the container blondes, sweet, with a thin skin so that it remains only a bitter aftertaste.
Wash the oranges and put them in a saucepan with 'cold water. Boil for 30 min and placed in a saucepan with cold water for 5 minutes the container to stop the cooking. Cut them in half, remove any seeds and blend them.
Beat the eggs with the sugar until frothy. the container Combine 3 times in the ground almonds, orange, poppy seeds and baking powder. Mix very well. Grease and flour the pan, pour the mixture, flatten and bake for 45/50 minutes at 180 degrees. Will be considered the toothpick test. The cake must be perfectly flat.
Let cool 10 minutes and remove the hinge. While it cools completely prepare the decoration. I preferred it just central. Cut the oranges into slices and place in a baking dish without overlapping (I've done it twice). Combine 2 fingers of water and sugar sprinkled on top of two fingers. Caramelize, turning the slices a couple the container of times. It will take a good quarter of an hour. Leave to drain and cool on a wire rack. Decorate and serve.

This is 'really' a cake Sephardic Jewish, ancient, that you do for Pesach, the Jewish Pasua, of course, during which you do not use the flour and even yeast. It 'taken from the book by Claudia Roden The Book of Jewish the container Food, with the modification of adding baking the container powder the container and poppy seeds. THE papapvero and 'a force, and as' always been used in Ashkenazic Jewish cuisine, that' the container Eastern and Central Europe, but not by the Sephardim. The yeast can 'put if you do not prepare for Easter. The combination the container of orange and almond 'sweet deglie the characteristic of the Spanish Jews. Reply Delete
The Roden and 'was the first to spread the recipe, which until then and' always been a family heritage and unknown outside of the Sephardic families. But now 'became very popular and respected, taken up by many other chefs / cookbook authors, with variations like this. I am an assiduous reader as your silent, and I really like how you write. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to tell you that I follow your blog really happy. Delete
Really pleases me to learn all these things. As usual, I did a quick search on the web about this cake but by typing the name in English, my searches have stopped the container right away, so I simply write from who it came from. Now I know a lot more. Thank you Rebecca. Delete
